Oil on hardboard
8" x 10"
2015-03-31

This is a study – photo reference from Sktchy. CC is welcome.

I'm still trying to work up to some level of familiarity with oil paints. Limited color palette of titanium white, yellow ochre, phthalo blue, cadmium red deep.

Not aiming for photorealism with this. Instead, I'm focusing on believable form, proportions, and value control. This was also an exercise in simplification of the overall form of the head.

I feel I'm turning the form pretty well here and that the relative values are all fairly correct. The silhouette is too sharp – particularly in the forehead, bridge of the nose, and back of the head. More variance in edging could and should have been applied to the top of the hair as well.

The value of the highlight on the jawline is too bright and its color went too cool, so it definitely sticks out too much. Otherwise, I felt I kept the relative color temperatures in the lights and shadows warm and cool respectively. The background could have received much more attention, as it feels exceptionally flat and permits the eye to drift away from the subject too easily. Some amount of vignetting would have helped considerably.

The shirt is too high chroma for the piece and could have been clamped down a bit so as not to compete with the head. Also, tighter cropping would have helped create a more interesting image.

This is also my first time using a dry sable to smooth out some of the brush strokes where I felt they were being more harmful in denoting planes rather than helpful.

Learned a lot with this one. Looking forward to the next study. I'm going to try for even further simplification of the forms and letting shadow details disappear even further.
